Languages & EAL
At Middleton, we value the cultural diversity of our school community. Our learners hail from different countries, many of whom speak another language instead of or in addition to English. While our academic programmes are predominantly delivered in English, we offer a range of languages for students to develop proficiency in their mother tongue or learn an additional language — and support learners whose first language is not English through our English as an Additional Language programme.
Additional Languages
- We believe that being bilingual, culturally competent and internationally-minded gives our learners an advantage in today's globalised world
- Drawing on EtonHouse's decades of expertise, language is not "taught" but naturally acquired through meaningful experiences using an inquiry-based curriculum
- Learners build and practise targeted vocabulary through conversations and hands-on tasks — not just reading, writing, speaking and understanding drills
- Cultural elements such as crafts and celebrations are woven into the curriculum to foster appreciation and understanding of each language's culture
- Beyond Primary, learners can continue their language studies and take it as an IGCSE and A-Level subject
English as an Additional Language (EAL) & Intensive EAL (IEAL)
- Learners are identified for EAL support at the point of admission or by their English teacher within the first few weeks of school, followed by a paid assessment to determine the right level of support
- Small-group EAL Foundation (฿60,000/year) or Intensive EAL (฿75,000/year) programmes, depending on the intensity of support required
- EAL consists of 2 to 3 pull-out sessions for Grade 1 and above; IEAL offers daily structured sessions for enhanced support and proficiency development
- Progress is tracked through ongoing observation and formative and summative assessment; learners graduate once they meet the English standard for their grade level and move on to another additional language of their choice
- By Grade 6, all learners are expected to meet the English proficiency needed to access the Secondary and High School programme
